Bishoftu or Debre Zeit is one of the nearby days out destinations on the outskirts of Addis Ababa in the southeast direction. Found 40 km from Addis Ababa, the town is famed for the number of crater lakes and its boutique resorts which makes it one of the premium leisure travelers spot in the vicinity of Addis Ababa. These craters lakes are created by volcanic explosions, later filled by water. The largest of all the lakes is Lake Hora, where the annual Ireecha/ Thanksgiving day of the Oromo people of Ethiopia/ being celebrated. According to local lore, this is the second-deepest lake in Ethiopia. The best way to appreciate this scenic body of water is from the crater rim at one of the hotel’s drinks in hand. The view is sensational. Apart from its scenic setting, the lake area is the ultimate spot to gaze at dozens of flamingos on the surface of the lake.

Getting there
Buses and minibuses leave everyday day from Addis Ababa and Adama. From the bus station to the turn-offs for the Lake Bishoftu or Lake Babogaya hotels, you can take taxis or tuk-tuks.

· Lake Hora, located just north of the town center, is a wild and beautiful lake offering a haven for diverse birdlife. While a footpath encircles the lake, visitors are advised against venturing alone due to safety concerns.
· The first Sunday after Meskel witnesses the vibrant Irreechaa festival celebrated by the Oromo people at Lake Hora. This significant cultural event involves thanksgiving to Waka and prayers for a bountiful planting season.
· Lake Chelekleka, a shallow lake located 2km west of the main roundabout, is a popular spot for birdwatching, where visitors may encounter lesser flamingos, pelicans, and a variety of waterfowl. While not a crater lake, it still offers a unique birdwatching experience.

Taxis and tuk-tuks are the primary means of transport to move around Bishoftu town. For better convenience when exploring the town, consider renting a taxi or tuk-tuk with a driver.
